Stormi: the release-word conversation

By Angier K9 · Learning & editorial resources · October 3, 2026

“Now I know.” Stormi’s owner has connected the lesson to a detail in her own training: she had taught sit and down, but had not used a word to say when the position was finished. Follow the conversation that brings her to that insight.

4:28 · She brings a question from the videos.

Open the owner’s question ↗

The owner has watched the session recordings. She noticed that the trainer says sit and then expects Stormi to remain in the position. In her understanding, a separate stay word would tell the dog to keep doing it. She brings that difference into the first owner lesson.

It is a useful starting point for this story: she is already paying attention to the language in the videos. The question gives the trainer something specific to explain, and it helps the viewer understand why the release word matters later in the conversation.

4:43 · The position and its ending belong together.

Continue into the explanation from 4:43. The trainer describes the implied stay in Stormi’s training: the requested position continues until he gives the release. He then demonstrates a down and its ending.

Follow both parts of that example. The word that asks for the position and the word that finishes it have different jobs. This is the sequence the trainer is explaining to Stormi’s owner. Academy’s cues, markers and release guide gives you a vocabulary for asking about those jobs in your own lesson.

This early passage also places the owner’s question in the full conversation. The later insight is connected to an explanation she has heard here.

16:49 · She recognises a detail in her own words.

After a longer discussion of commands and markers, the owner explains that she had taught Stormi to sit and lie down without saying a word for her to get up. She then says:

“Now I know.”

Stormi’s owner · First owner lesson

The trainer continues by talking about the knowledge a person comes to a training program to gain. The exchange gives the owner time to name something she had been doing and understand how it relates to the lesson.

Stay through the response that follows. Her words express a particular learning insight here. The larger family story follows how explanation becomes coached practice over the next owner visits.

Keep the learning connected to the family.

Watch Stormi: Learning Each Other, the 2:21 family film drawn from all three owner lessons. Her main family story connects the release-word insight with outdoor practice and her owner’s go-home experience.

For another hands-on learning moment, follow Shadow’s family turn with the leash. Academy’s patience for the people guide brings the two families’ moments together around the questions people can bring to an owner lesson.

The published Stormi case gives the wider training arc. Return to the original first lesson whenever you want the full explanation around one of these passages.
