Five questions to follow through the Angier K9 recordings

By Angier K9 · Learning & editorial resources · October 1, 2026

You can follow a dog’s story from beginning to end, or follow one question through different dogs and sessions. These five series offer the second route. Each begins with a complete exchange and enough surrounding context to keep its meaning clear.

Before the Dog Moves

Question: what happened before the response?

Pepper’s walking routine and Rocko’s verbal-cue exchange focus attention on the handler’s position, movement, repeated requests and explanation. Begin with the Academy source guide, which links both recordings and gives you a four-part observation record.

Same Cue. Different World.

Question: what changes when the same word is used in a different setting or exchange?

Pepper and Rocko’s down exercises preserve holding, release, repeated requests and assistance. The accompanying viewing guide examines the interval when Pepper leaves the selected camera view and the help still present in Rocko’s attempt. Two dogs sharing a cue are not a controlled before-and-after test.

Make the Game Worth Playing

Question: what makes this particular dog want to participate and return?

Follow Rocko at 6:50 through 7:15.6, then Pepper at 5:43 through 6:00.8. The release, toy invitation and handler’s active play are part of these different exchanges. Use Play and participation to examine their wider teaching question.

The Other End of the Leash

Question: what does the person learn that changes the next exchange?

In Kodak’s recording at 1:01, guests or relatives are part of the greeting discussion; they are not presented as his owners. In Pepper’s session at 7:36, follow the second-handler walking and coaching through 8:51.8. The different requests, help, pauses and continuation belong in the record. Begin with Watch the handler, not just the dog.

Room for More Than One

Question: what changes when another dog enters the picture?

Follow Bun and Zuri Chan at 40:13 through 40:49.2, then the later passage at 58:39 through 58:52.2. The passages are separated by about seventeen minutes and fifty-one seconds in the original recording. The assisted approach, collar help, sniff, praise and separation remain visible. The later explanation includes both increased comfort and an ongoing limit around a head-on approach; it is not a claim that an entire program is finished.

Continue with Holding position in a moving room and Watch the wider context.

Choose one question, then watch the whole exchange.

Start with the topic that interests you, use the original source clock, and record the request, visible help, response and continuation. The Academy library provides observation tools. The Films library helps you choose a story and follow it into the recordings. The Field Notes research library provides another route into the published session analysis.
